Is it appropriate for the 18th century, or any period at all? If it's automatically rewinding I'm sure not, but wow... it would be lovely for a sewing box. Could pass for something else when not in use.

I know they had an acorn one in the 19th C (those crazy Victorians!) but, considering they had this tricorn shaped one (http://www.christies.com/lotFinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=1707461) in the 18th C, I think you are safe.
