I'm gonna do it!
18 January 2015 07:16 pmI'm still excited about the class, and all of your comments have been very helpful. So I'll be pulling together the description and estimating for handout cost. Honestly, this feels like a much smaller undertaking than other classes I've taught, or even thought about. It's a very narrow focus, so I won't be going crazy having to cover everything in a short time. I'm thinking of a 1.5 hour block; I doubt I can adequately cover it in a shorter one, and 2 hours is awfully long for a lecture!
I'll definitely have samples, but the vast majority of it is simply visual. This is really a way of thinking about your fabric, and ideas for using it. Not so much actual technical stuff like how to do smocking. Oh, and I'll make the Pinterest board public. The most time-consuming part will be adding informative captions! :p
And I've been sewing! Today I made the second mockup of the Bernhardt Regency stays from Sabine's blog. I think they'll work very well, and I didn't have to do too much to customize them. Primarily:
1. Double the hip gussets as given. Plenty of flare, works great for my hips.
2. Take out 1" at the center front. There was very little gap in the back, and the front armhole was digging in. (If it continues to do so, I'll cut that back directly.)
3. Make 2 bust gussets instead of 1 each side, both the side of the original, except tapered in 1/4" each side at the top so they're a little curved.
I've never worn stays with a busk, so that felt different, but I think it'll work okay.
Mystery of the day: The original stays I have (cut on the bias and nearly identical to the Bernhardt) don't have boning next to the eyelets at the center back. Is that typical? It would never work for me; I get horrible buckling even when there's little tension.
